Exclusive city residence launched in Penang’s heritage zone

Jul 08, 2011
Asian Global Business Sdn Bhd (AGB) has launched the Rice Miller City Residences, a 99-unit exclusive residence located in front of old Penang Harbour, on the last sizeable tract of freehold land in the core heritage zone of George Town, Penang.

The Rice Miller City Residences will, in fact, be located within the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Pre-launch interest has been strong, with the project drawing attention not just locally, but from Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Singapore as well.

AGB has already received firm commitments for 41 out the 99 units available.

The residences are part of AGB’s Rice Miller Project, an infill inner city development on four adjoining parcels of land covering three acres.

The mixed-features development will eventually include the boutique Rice Miller Hotel, lifestyle restaurants and cafés, select commercial and retail outlets, a private club, gym, and 24-hour security.

AGB Chairman Kate Lim said, “By conserving and re-adapting as much of the existing built environment as we can – including a century-old godown and shophouses – we aim to repair and build on the historical fabric of George Town and bring new value and life to the city."

She added, “This part of George Town has borne witness to much history in the last two centuries, and we believe the Rice Miller project not only pays homage to the legacy and entrepreneurial spirit of George Town’s pioneer settlers, but will also play a key role in building a new community of city residents."

Held at Carcosa Seri Negara, the launch was officiated by Lim; Malaysia’s Commissioner of Heritage, Prof Emeritus Dato’ Dr Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid; Penang Global Tourism managing director, Ooi Geok Ling; and Henry Butcher Malaysia (Penang) Sdn Bhd director, Dr Jason Teoh Poh Huat.

The building site for the Rice Miller City Residences is on Grade A land and is bound by Beach Street to the west and Weld Quay to the east, and it is a short distance away from the Tanjung City Marina.

Swettenham Pier, where international cruise liners dock, is only 10 minutes away, while the Penang International Airport is 20 minutes away..

George Town was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 8 July 2008 for possessing cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.

The actual UNESCO site consists of a 110-hectare core zone containing almost a hundred buildings of major historical and heritage value, including Fort Cornwallis, the Acheh Street Mosque, various clan association buildings, Masjid Kapitan Keling, the Mahamariamman Temple, and Government House.
